Deletion mutants in COP9/Signalosome subunits in fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe display distinct phenotypes
The COP9/signalosome complex is highly conserved in evolution and possesses significant structural similarity to the 19S regulatory lid complex of the proteasome. It also shares limited similarity to the translation initiation factor eIF3. The signalosome interacts with multiple cullins in mammalian cells. In the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe, the Csn1 subunit is required for the removal of covalently attached Nedd8 from Pcu1, one of three S. pombe cullins. It remains unclear whether this activity is required for all the functions ascribed to the signalosome. We previously identified Csn1 and Csn2 as signalosome subunits in S. pombe. csn1 and csn2 null mutants are DNA damage sensitive and exhibit slow DNA replication. Two further putative subunits, Csn4 and Csn5, were identified from the S. pombe genome database. Herein, we characterize null mutations of csn4 and csn5 and demonstrate that both genes are required for removal of Nedd8 from the S. pombe cullin Pcu1 and that their protein products associate with Csn1 and Csn2. However, neither csn4 nor csn5 null mutants share the csn1 and csn2 mutant phenotypes. Our data suggest that the subunits of the signalosome cannot be considered as a distinct functional unit and imply that different subunits of the signalosome mediate distinct functions
Limits of sympathetic cooling of fermions: The role of the heat capacity of the coolant
The sympathetic cooling of an initially degenerate Fermi gas by either an
ideal Bose gas below or an ideal Boltzmann gas is investigated. It is
shown that the efficiency of cooling by a Bose gas below is by no means
reduced when its heat capacity becomes much less than that of the Fermi gas,
where efficiency is measured by the decrease in the temperature of the Fermi
gas per number of particles evaporated from the coolant. This contradicts the
intuitive idea that an efficient coolant must have a large heat capacity. In
contrast, for a Boltzmann gas a minimal value of the ratio of the heat
capacities is indeed necessary to achieve T=0 and all of the particles must be

Shopping for food: lessons from a London borough
Purpose – This paper aims to measure access to food in an inner London borough. Design/methodology/approach – There were six phases, which included designing food baskets, consultation with local residents and a shop survey. Recognising the cultural make-up of the borough food baskets and menus were developed for four key communities, namely: White British, Black Caribbean, Turkish, and Black African. Three areas were identified for the study and shopping hubs identified with a 500-metre radius from a central parade of shops. Findings – The findings paint an intricate web of interactions ranging from availability in shops to accessibility and affordability being key issues for some groups. It was found that in the areas studied there was availability of some key healthy items, namely fresh fruit and vegetables, but other items such as: fresh meat and poultry, fish, lower fat dairy foods, high fibre pasta and brown rice were not available. Access was found to be defined, by local people, as more extensive than just physical distance to/from shops – for many shopping was made more difficult by having to use taxis and inconvenient buses. Small shops were important in delivering healthy food options to communities in areas of deprivation and were judged to offer a better range and more appropriate food than the branches of the major supermarket chains. Research limitations/implications – The importance of monitoring the impact of shops and shop closures on healthy food availability is emphasised. From a policy perspective the findings suggest that approaches based on individual agency need to be balanced with upstream public health nutrition approaches in order to influence the options available. Originality/value – The paper is arguably the first to examine and dissect the issue of food availability and accessibility in the inner London borough in question, especially in the light of its proposed redevelopment for the London Olympics in 2012
Finite-well potential in the 3D nonlinear Schroedinger equation: Application to Bose-Einstein condensation
Using variational and numerical solutions we show that stationary
negative-energy localized (normalizable) bound states can appear in the
three-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with a finite square-well
potential for a range of nonlinearity parameters. Below a critical attractive
nonlinearity, the system becomes unstable and experiences collapse. Above a
limiting repulsive nonlinearity, the system becomes highly repulsive and cannot
be bound. The system also allows nonnormalizable states of infinite norm at
positive energies in the continuum. The normalizable negative-energy bound
states could be created in BECs and studied in the laboratory with present

Quantum Entangled Dark Solitons Formed by Ultracold Atoms in Optical Lattices
Inspired by experiments on Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices, we
study the quantum evolution of dark soliton initial conditions in the context
of the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. An extensive set of quantum measures is
utilized in our analysis, including von Neumann and generalized quantum
entropies, quantum depletion, and the pair correlation function. We find that
quantum effects cause the soliton to fill in. Moreover, soliton-soliton
collisions become inelastic, in strong contrast to the predictions of
mean-field theory. These features show that the lifetime and collision
properties of dark solitons in optical lattices provide clear signals of
