Welcome to the latest issue of SRA Update. There is a lot going on at the moment, not least the rapidly-changing situation in Ukraine and the UK Government’s reaction to it. We continue to be in touch with Government departments and others to clarify what we are doing to help you adhere to the latest sanctions laid down against Russia and its interests. Against that, we have a busy programme of our own to deal with.
We are digesting your responses to our proposals on the future of post six-year run-off cover. And we want your views on a wide range of other subjects to, such as re-introducing keeping of the roll and rules on making sure workplace environments are safe.
With new and updated sanctions continuing to be added against individuals and organisations linked to Russia, it is critical that you and your firm stay up-to-date with the last measures being introduced. We have produced guidance to make sure you are aware of your obligations regarding these sanctions and other implications – such as money-laundering reporting.

Find out more and have your say on our proposed rule changes on wellbeing. They would reinforce our powers to deal with risks to the public which stem from a poor work culture in law firms. The proposals also seek to clarify our approach to situations where a solicitor’s health issues affect their ability to practise, or to participate in our enforcement processes.

We are holding a series of roundtables in England and Wales to discuss how the qualifying work experience element of our new Solicitors Qualifying Examination affects would-be entrants to the profession. There are events in Birmingham, Manchester and Swansea for those involved in the training of potential solicitors.

Cyber-criminals continue to try their hardest to get hold of your clients’ money or sensitive information. You should keep doing all you can to protect yourselves and your clients from increased attacks on your systems.

The Legal Ombudsman’s overview of annual complaints 2020/21 suggests there are improvements to make and that the basics remain key. Simple customer service failings are driving a huge bulk of work, with a large amount linked to poor communication. The report highlights the areas where customer service needs to improve and where service providers can do more to resolve complaints in-house.
